Discover the Fun City of Wollongong

Situated in the Illawarra region of the east coast of Australia, Wollongong of New South Wales occupies the third position in regards to its geographical extent. You can reach this scenic city through both the coastal road and rail route heading to south Sydney. Its name, pronounced as ‘woollong-gong’ stands for "sound of the sea" in the local language. The other significations of Wollongong relate to sea and islands.

The evolution of Wollongong

This diversely populated city of Australia emerged as a hub for coal mining, steelworks and industrial port. It also became the centre of New South Wales fishing industry owing to its close proximity to the sea. Today the city is popular to foreign students because of the University of Wollongong and to travellers because of its vast shopping complexes. Wollongong enjoys a rapport also because of such religious edifices like the Regional cathedrals and the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple.

Transportation in Wollongong

Road: The Waterfall-Yallah Southern Freeway passes near the Wollongong University and exits at the southern end. Previously known as F6, it forms a part of the National Highway of Australia.

Rail: The South Coast railway line connects Wollongong to various main cities of Australia. It is easy to access the Southern Highlands and Sydney Markets because of this interconnecting rail service.

Nightlife – If you want to spend a happening night in Wollongong, get into the Crown Street Mall that is spotted with an entire array of restaurants, cafes, stadiums and theatres. Wollongong has a rich assortment of pleasure parks like MacCabe Park, Stuart Park and J.J.Kelly Park with some of the best lookouts of New South Wales lagoons and creek.

Sports – Wollongong is famous for its vibrant sporting events like rugby leagues who participate in the New South Wales Shield cup competition. Football is another popular sport in this city of Australia and you could have a wonderful time watching a game or two.
